15 Years of the Tilburg Spoorzone: The Power of Collaboration

The challenge

The fifteenth anniversary of the Tilburg Spoorzone marked an important milestone. It was an opportunity not only to reflect on the transformation of a former railway and industrial site into one of the city’s most vibrant districts, but also to look ahead.

The brief from the Municipality of Tilburg and SDK Vastgoed was straightforward: how do we take the next step in the Spoorzone’s development together, alongside both long-standing and new partners?

The challenge was never simply to organise a celebration. It was to create a meaningful moment that would actively engage a diverse network of stakeholders in shaping the area’s next chapter. How do you turn visitors into participants? How do you connect different interests, perspectives and ambitions? And how do you build genuine shared ownership for what comes next?

The approach

The event was designed around one central idea: the future of the Spoorzone is something we create together.

We developed a clear narrative that connected the area’s past, present and future. The programme brought together keynote speakers, interviews and panel discussions with interactive workshops and guided expeditions through the district itself. A specially commissioned short documentary and an original poem by the Tilburg City Poet provided a common thread throughout the day.

Rather than attending as spectators, participants were invited to experience the Spoorzone firsthand, meet one another, exchange ideas and contribute to conversations about its future. By positioning everyone as a co-creator of the place, the anniversary evolved into a collective dialogue that strengthened relationships, sparked new collaborations and reinforced shared ownership of the area’s next phase.

The outcome

With more than 150 participants, the event reflected the broad coalition of organisations, professionals and local partners that has shaped the Spoorzone over the past fifteen years and will continue to do so in the future.

The combination of inspiring stories, substantive discussion and first-hand experiences within the district demonstrated the impact of fifteen years of collaboration. Participants left not only with a deeper understanding of the Spoorzone’s significance, but also with a clearer sense of their own role in its continued development.

The event strengthened engagement among existing and new stakeholders, broadened support for the next phase of development, and generated new connections and partnerships. Both participants and the commissioning organisations valued the balance between strategic content, active participation and a clear focus on the future.
