Marieke Koets from Sydney, Australia

How would you describe Sydney’s inhabitants?

Syndeysiders are active, love their beaches and depending on the suburb they’re arty, organic, corporate and sometimes in denial (it does get cold here in winter)

Why do you love your city?

Sydney is always on the move; the people, the construction sites and the events. But at the same time there is the tranquility of beautiful beaches and parks. It’s city and sea, concrete and nature, busy and peaceful.

What’s the best place in your city and why?

I love Coogee. Great restaurants, cafes and pubs, lovely beach, baths and park. Still good parking and you can start the famous and beautiful Coogee to Bondi costal walk here.

What’s the biggest challenge your city is facing?

Two big challenges in Sydney are traffic and nightlife. City traffic can be a nightmare. Opinions differ on what the solution is; more roads or better public transport. Since the lock-out laws ( Sydney’s night life is dying a bit. Famous King’s Cross is empty and it effecting lots people, business industries and other suburbs.

Should we open a flexible office in your city? And if so, who would we be working for?

BRAND would be the perfect organisation to bring back nightlife and cultural engagement in the city and help the inhabitants understand the positive effects of cycling. I would go after the City of Sydney (it would be great to work with our mayor Clover Moore) as your first client and help them elevate their Cycle campaign and start a ‘Bring Sydney back to (night)life’ campaign. BRAND would be the perfect fit as they have the knowledge and experience in exactly those fields.
