First Dutch travel app available in Chinese

Rotterdam’s popular app Rotterdam Routes now offers free audio tours in Mandarin Chinese

Nowadays travellers are looking for a more in-depth, or even unique, travel experience. Reason enough for the city of Rotterdam to launch the free app Rotterdam Routes in the fall of 2014. The popular app with more than 35,000 downloads gives visitors a fresh, fun way to explore the city. Born and bred locals share their favourite places and let you discover the city’s best kept secrets. Next to Dutch and English the app is now available in Mandarin Chinese and free to download in the App store and Google Play.

Exponential growth of Chinese tourists

With the increasing popularity of Rotterdam, the city is experiencing an exponential growth of Chinese tourists. 2015 shows a 63% increase relative to 2012, and a 92% increase in overnight stays (CBS, 2015). Chinese tourists are becoming increasingly important for the Rotterdam tourist sector. Rotterdam wants to encourage them to visit the city by alleviating language problems, and providing plentiful and relevant information. Translating the app Rotterdam Routes into Mandarin Chinese is the first step in offering the Chinese tourist more guidance through on- and offline channels.

New way of travelling

Rotterdam Routes offers a new way of travelling. Like other apps it has transformed the travel landscape through navigation. It guides visitors through the city and provides access to the city’s different offerings. Whether it be language, directions, sights, hotels or restaurants. All within hand’s reach. Rotterdam Routes combines the practical and pleasant sides of traveling, and by doing so responds to the needs of the modern traveller.
